Fake auction scam:手法、警示信号与应对
Shopping scams · alto
Fraudsters build sites mimicking official auctioneers or invent them, complete with vehicle photos, auction notices, company IDs and even a real auctioneer's name copied from public registries. Sponsored social media ads drive traffic.
The victim registers, bids and "wins" an item at a very attractive price. They receive a winning notice and a short deadline to pay via Pix or boleto to a personal account or a company unrelated to the auction.
After payment, extra fees appear (storage, paperwork) and eventually the site disappears.
Sinais / Signs
- Price far below market value.
- Payment to a personal account or a company ID different from the auctioneer.
- Very short payment deadline and pressure not to lose the item.
- No way to visit the yard or inspect the item in person.
- Newly registered domain or one resembling a known auctioneer.
- Contact only via WhatsApp.
Prevenção / Prevention
- Check with the state commercial registry that the auctioneer is registered and that the site is theirs.
- Call the number on the official registry, not the one on the site.
- Visit the display location before bidding.
- Pay only into an account linked to the auctioneer as stated in the notice.
- Be wary of sponsored auction ads with unrealistic prices.
O que fazer / What to do
- Call your bank right away using the official number (back of the card or in the app) and ask to block cards, accounts and access.
- If you paid via Pix, ask your bank to open a MED (Special Return Mechanism) claim as soon as possible — time matters because funds move fast.
- File a police report (many Brazilian states accept online reports) and keep screenshots, receipts, numbers and links.
- Report the site to the commercial registry and to the auctioneer whose name was used.
- Report the profile, ad or number to the platform (social network that ran the ad) so it gets taken down and others are protected.
FAQ
How do I know an auction site is legitimate?
Check the auctioneer with the commercial registry, confirm the site address by official phone and distrust payment to third parties.
Is a very cheap car at auction a scam?
Not necessarily, but a far-below-market price plus urgency and payment to a third party is the fake-auction pattern.
