Fake R$ 1,680 'Auxílio Reconstrução 2026': how Brazil's scam works
Brazil's government warns the R$ 1,680 'Auxílio Reconstrução 2026' does not exist. How the fake link steals data, the official channel and what to do.
A message spreading on WhatsApp and social media in Brazil promises an "Auxílio Reconstrução 2026" payment of R$ 1,680. It is a scam. On October 30, 2026, Brazil's Ministry of Integration and Regional Development said the benefit does not exist and that the link used to "check eligibility" can expose personal data, according to a report based on Agência Brasil. In September, Kaspersky had flagged a near-identical campaign promising R$ 1,050, as InfoMoney reported.
Is the R$ 1,680 benefit real?
No. The real Auxílio Reconstrução was created for families hit by the 2024 floods in Rio Grande do Sul. The official gov.br service page describes it as a single R$ 5,100 payment, starting with a registration at the city hall and confirmed by the head of the family with a gov.br account on the Dataprev system. It is free.
| Point | Fake message | Real benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | R$ 1,680 (R$ 1,050 in an earlier version) | R$ 5,100, single payment |
| Year | "2026" | 2024 Rio Grande do Sul floods |
| Channel | Link on WhatsApp and social media | City hall registration + gov.br account |
| Where to check | Look-alike government site | auxilioreconstrucao.dataprev.gov.br |
How does the fake benefit scam work?
- The message arrives on WhatsApp, often forwarded by someone who already fell for it.
- The link opens a mobile-only page that copies government branding and asks for personal data.
- To "release" the money, victims must share the link with many contacts or groups.
- Victims are then redirected to illegal betting sites or pushed to install apps in pay-per-install schemes — a step criminals can swap for a malicious app that steals messages and banking passwords, Kaspersky warned.
Who is being targeted?
Anyone on WhatsApp can receive it, but the lure works best on low-income families, people who have received social benefits before and residents of disaster-hit areas. Using the name of a real, well-known program — and the memory of the 2024 floods — makes the promise sound plausible. The criminals simply change the amount from one wave to the next, so a different figure does not mean a different, legitimate program. Government-benefit lures are a recurring pattern in Brazil, from fake pension officials to fake tax-ID warnings.
How to spot a fake government benefit
- No official benefit requires you to forward a message to get paid.
- The address does not end in gov.br.
- Requests for passwords, SMS codes, document photos or app installs outside official stores.
- Urgency ("last day to claim") or a promise of money for everyone.
What to do
- Don't click or forward; warn the person who sent it.
- Check benefits only at auxilioreconstrucao.dataprev.gov.br or gov.br.
- If you typed in personal data, expect follow-up contacts that use it (fake bank call centers, fake officials) and turn on WhatsApp two-step verification.
- If you installed an app, remove it, change banking passwords from another device and call your bank.
- If you lost money via Pix, file a police report and ask your bank to open a refund request under the MED mechanism (how MED 2.0 works).
