Fake DMV scam (traffic fines and vehicle tax) : fonctionnement, signaux et que faire
Payment fraud · médio
The victim receives an SMS, email or WhatsApp message about an "unpaid fine", "overdue vehicle tax with a discount" or "blocked registration", with a link to settle it. Sponsored search ads also lead to fake sites.
The site mimics the official DETRAN (state DMV) or tax portal, asks for plate and vehicle numbers, and generates a Pix or boleto to the scammer while capturing card details.
In the US, the most common version is a text about an "unpaid toll" or traffic ticket with a payment link.
Sinais / Signs
- SMS or WhatsApp with a link to pay a fine or tax.
- Big discount for paying today.
- Site address not ending in the official government domain.
- Pix generated to an individual or a company unrelated to government.
- Threat of vehicle seizure or licence suspension.
Prevenção / Prevention
- Check fines and vehicle tax only on your state's official DETRAN/tax site or official app, typing the address.
- Don't click links in texts about fines.
- Check that the boleto or Pix is issued to the official agency.
- Beware of sponsored results when searching "pay vehicle tax".
- Sign up for official electronic fine-notification systems.
O que fazer / What to do
- Call your bank right away using the official number (back of the card or in the app) and ask to block cards, accounts and access.
- If you paid via Pix, ask your bank to open a MED (Special Return Mechanism) claim as soon as possible — time matters because funds move fast.
- File a police report (many Brazilian states accept online reports) and keep screenshots, receipts, numbers and links.
- Report the SMS to your carrier and the fake site to CERT.br.
- In the US, report fake toll or ticket texts to the FBI IC3 (ic3.gov) and the FTC (reportfraud.ftc.gov).
