Estafa del código de verificación de Google Voice: cómo funciona, señales y qué hacer

Identity theft · médio

A supposed buyer on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or similar says they need to "verify you're real" and will send you a code. The six-digit code that arrives by text is actually from Google: by sharing it, you let the scammer set up a Google Voice account tied to your number.

According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, the goal is not to take your money directly but to use that number to scam other people in your name while staying undetected. Google says it never asks for this code.

Sinais / Signs

  • A buyer asking to "verify" you're real
  • A request to share a code you received by text
  • A text from Google you didn't request
  • An interested party who avoids meeting in person

Prevenção / Prevention

  • Never share verification codes with anyone
  • Read the code message: it says where it's from and what it's for
  • Prefer dealing in person and accepting verified funds
  • Take your time when buying or selling online
  • Keep the conversation inside the listing platform

O que fazer / What to do

  • Reclaim your number on Google Voice's page (voice.google.com/regain)
