Fake vacation rental scam: cómo funciona, señales y qué hacer

Shopping scams · médio

The scammer advertises an attractive, cheap property on social media, classifieds or a cloned booking platform, using photos copied from other listings.

They move the conversation to WhatsApp or email, offer a discount for booking off-platform and ask for a deposit or full payment by Pix or wire.

On arrival, the family finds the address doesn't exist, the property belongs to someone else, or it was "rented" to several groups at once.

Sinais / Signs

  • Price far below similar properties in the area.
  • Offer to pay outside the booking platform.
  • Full upfront payment by Pix to an individual.
  • Host refuses a video call from the property.
  • Photos that appear in other listings under another name.

Prevenção / Prevention

  • Book and pay only inside known platforms that hold payment in escrow.
  • Reverse-search the photos and check the address on maps and street view.
  • Ask for a contract, owner ID and a video call from the property.
  • Prefer paying by credit card.
  • Distrust booking-platform links received by message.

O que fazer / What to do

  • Call your bank right away using the official number (back of the card or in the app) and ask to block cards, accounts and access.
  • If you paid via Pix, ask your bank to open a MED (Special Return Mechanism) claim as soon as possible — time matters because funds move fast.
  • File a police report (many Brazilian states accept online reports) and keep screenshots, receipts, numbers and links.
  • Report the profile, ad or number to the platform (booking platform or social network) so it gets taken down and others are protected.
  • In the US, report to the FBI IC3 (ic3.gov) and the FTC (reportfraud.ftc.gov); if your identity was misused, follow the plan at identitytheft.gov.

FAQ

How do I avoid a beach-house rental scam?

Use platforms that hold payment, confirm the address and owner, and never pay everything upfront to an individual.

The host asked me to pay off-site for a discount. Should I?

No. Paying off-platform removes your protection and is the first step of this scam.
