Synthetic identity fraud: كيف يعمل وعلامات التحذير وماذا تفعل

Identity theft · alto

The fraudster combines a real ID number (in the US, a Social Security Number; in Brazil, a CPF) with an invented name, birth date and address, creating a person who does not exist. Photos and documents may be generated or altered with AI.

This identity applies for credit, is rejected at first, but gradually builds a file. For months it pays on time, grows credit limits and is sometimes added as an authorized user on someone else's card to boost the score.

In the "bust-out", the fraudster maxes out all available credit at several institutions and vanishes. Because no victim complains right away, losses are often booked as ordinary bad debt.

Sinais / Signs

  • Collection letters or credit offers for someone who does not live at your address
  • A child with a credit file, or a CPF with debts
  • Being denied credit due to history you do not recognize
  • For companies: multiple applicants sharing a phone, address or device
  • For companies: fast limit growth followed by simultaneous max-out

Prevenção / Prevention

  • In the US, freeze your and your children's credit at the three bureaus
  • In Brazil, periodically check the Central Bank's Registrato and credit bureaus
  • Guard ID documents and numbers carefully and avoid sharing them
  • Companies: combine document checks, biometrics with liveness and link analysis between applications
  • Companies: use official-source ID verification services where available

O que fazer / What to do

  • Report at IdentityTheft.gov (US) for a recovery plan
  • Dispute the accounts with credit bureaus and each creditor
  • In Brazil, file a police report and dispute with the institutions and bureaus
  • Keep the credit freeze in place

FAQ

If the person doesn't exist, who is the victim?

Lenders lose money, and the real owner of the ID number may see their credit history affected.

Why are children targeted?

Because their numbers are rarely checked and misuse can go unnoticed for years.
