ATM “helper” scam in Brazil: warning signs and how to protect yourself
Gangs offer “help” at ATMs to swap cards and see PINs, mostly targeting older people. Recent police cases in Brazil, red flags and what to do.
In malls, supermarkets, pharmacies and metro stations across Brazil, a friendly stranger offers to help someone struggling at an ATM. Minutes later the real card has been swapped, the PIN has been seen, and withdrawals and purchases follow. Police say the “fake helper” scam mainly targets older people.

Suspects are presumed innocent until convicted.
Red flags
- Unsolicited help, or a note claiming your card is being cancelled or needs an update.
- A stranger handing you a phone to “call the bank”.
- A card that gets stuck while someone urges you to re-enter your PIN.
- A returned card that looks different.
How to protect yourself
- Never accept help from strangers; ask identified bank staff.
- Use ATMs inside branches or malls; avoid withdrawing alone at night.
- Shield your PIN, never hand over your card, and call your bank yourself using the number on the card.
If it happened to you
- Call your bank right away to block the card and dispute charges.
- File a police report with time and place, since cameras help.
- Escalate to the Central Bank and Procon if refused.
